Wilfredo Medina

For 34 years Wilfredo has been Artistic Director of The Family Life Theatre, an educational interactive theatre company. He’s been associated with the company since 1979.

In addition to national and international tours he has directed the company on segments of nationally televised specials. Most notably, “Talking Back” the Emmy Award winning series pilot, based on the company for ABC-TV. He has also directed the company’s appearances on an episode of the ABC Afterschool Special and two Peabody Award winning specials for CBS and PBS.

The company’s collaboration with Oprah Winfrey on the industrial film, “Saving Our Children,”won top honors in its category at the Houston Film Festival.

As an educator Wilfredo teaches Interactive Theatre, Socio-Drama and Critical Thinking. He spent five years as an adjunct professor of Critical Thinking and Interactive Theatre at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He is currently at LaGuardia Community College using Interactive Theatre to train the entire staff og Correction Officers at Riker’s Island on skills to de-escalate conflicts and violence.

Wilfredo is an Associate Director for CSW Global, a corporate training company, which uses interactive theatre as its model for training on issues of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. He has facilitated sessions in New York City, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mumbai and many other cities throughout India.

Wilfredo made his Off-Broadway directing debut with the Obie award winning musical, “The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin” by Kirsten Childs at Playwright’s Horizons. He received 2001 Drama Desk and Audelco Award nominations for Best Director of a Musical.

His collaboration with Kirsten Childs has also included “Rumplestiltskin,” for The New American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center and “An Evening of Theater Songs by Kirsten Child” at The Public Theatre's Joe's Pub. He has directed six national tours of “Corduroy, A Jazz Musical” by Scott D. Richards and Cusi Cram for the children’s theatre company TheaterWorksUSA.
